"You live in the sticks. Do you live on a farm? I swear there's no Black people there?"

These are the usual responses I receive when I say I'm from Hertfordshire. I never understood why until I observed that the narrative of Black British culture is London centric, which has led to misconceptions about Black folk from outside the capital.


Bumpkin Files is an archive and journal dedicated to Black British life beyond London + global African diasporic life in less visible spaces. The aim is to widen the narrative, bridge gaps between communities, provide more references + to uplift Black voices from all corners.
